After moving up here from the South a few year ago I was surprised to find so few good shops around. After using a few I have ended up using Fishermans Friend in Kings Heath (I can pass it on my way home) and Solihull Angling Centre. The former is more convenient but I prefer the latter.
The problem is while all we want a good local shop with quality bait and consumables, the shops don't make enough money that way. Bait sales have gone down with more anglers buying (in some instances being required to buy) bait, particularly pellets, at fisheries. Those same "shops" also selling hooks, line etc etc. Furthermore, the expensive items that shops used to make a profit on (rods, poles, boxes etc) are now not generally bought from the local shop but from a mailorder or online outlet as we all want to save a few quid.
The way it's going, we will end up with less high street shops many of which will be low quality outlets, more on-fishery outlets and a small number of mailorder/online outlets/superstores.

Ialways use Fishermans Friend in Kings Heath now the old Johnny Sidebottom's shop good for me save having to go to Bearwood. Get excellent personal service &help from Tony Troth the owner on any tackle i want &info on how to fish various places plus Sid works in there now he fishes the wednesdays opens . Don't know wether he's member though never asked him.also its one the foremost discount mail order dealers so get low low price's on tackle + they are the only one's that'll do interest free credit over 6or12 mth's on orders over £150. &£ 300 had an account there for over 7 year's now. Ialways place a premium on personal service. although i have on occasions bought online from Tackle-Shop &on Ebay
