Hi Bigone,you are right they are still great reels even after all this time.Market leader for many years.Even though a bit dated now I still use my 300S reels for my big bream fishing and some of my carping.My 440 Match is still used on my quiver rods.
If yours is black then I pressume it is the 840 model (or 841 if cack handed!) if so it is the same procedure to change the spring as shown.Also same spring part number-81081 (or 81932 for the 441/841 models).

Got the reels done thanks to your help. Cant wait to try them out. I think the mitchell reels are the best ever. quality of build and super to use. thanks lads especial Budgie great help

Only just seen the post. its very helpful for me Because all my reels are mitchell. I have old 300s , 3 match's 2 blue ones 1 black one. a 440 match which not been working for 5 years. Plus a black 840 which i will get working again. Cheers Budgie nice job. PS got the springs today from my local tackle shop.

Nice one helped you to Boilie. One of the best reels made. And i a few days i can start using it again, all fixed and looking like new.

AnglerPaul, I just joined today and your post caught my eye. I live in New Jersey, USA. I recently went to an outdoor flea market and purchased a couple of used reels and rods. One of the rods had a Mitchell 300a reel attached. This reel looks like it was hardly ever used. I realize that your post is from quite awhile ago, but if you got that much enjoyment from that reel, it would give me great pleasure to pack it up and send it to you.
