ActionIn addition's to the rod power, its action must also be considered. Most rods fall roughly into one of three popular categories. Rods which (similar to built-cane) bend progressively along their lenght, into a full curve under maximum load are described as A - all-through action Those whose action is mostly in the upper half or tip section are called B - medium tip actionRods where only the upper section tip really bends to any degree are called C - fast taper. All through action rods are designed for close-in situations and for fishing at reasonably short range, say distances of up to 30/40 yards. Beyond this, for picking up line and subsequently setting the hook when striking at greater distances, up to say 70/80 yards, a medium tip action is the tool for the job. This is probably the most useful all round actioned carp rod. To cope with still greater distances, 90 yards plus (far more specialized fishing), a fast taper action is needed. However, because a fast taper rod bends very little other than in the extreme tip, you need to be especially careful not to rip out the hook or snap the line when bringing a heavy fish to the net on the end of a short line. Nowdays, few carp rods are manufactured from either fibre glass, carbon fibre, which various strengthening and shock absorbing agents added such as Kevlar, has more or less taken over the specialist market, resulting in rods of a very narrow profile which , in addition to being immensely strong, are pleasantly light to use. LenghtWhile two piece 13ft specials are perhap necessary for ultra longe range carp fishing, most carp rods are produced in either the 11 or 12ft models For picking up line at distance and for overall carp fishing into deep waters I would suggest that a 12ft is absolutely ideal. For all close range work , casting and playing fish beneath overhanging tress, fishing overgrown jungletypes swims, etc., the standard lenght of a 11ft is perfect. In an 11 footer with a test curve of somewhere between 1 3/4lb to 2lb (taking lines 8 - 10lb test) is a close to the ideal rod as you could get. A word at this point is perhap in order about handle lenght, or more accurately where the screw reel fitting is positioned, because far too many rods have the reel fitting placed higher up the handle than is necessary. It may look very trendy, but what the point in having a foot of rod sticking out beyond your elbow when playing a fish. Not only is the rod's effective lenght reduced by this amount, it is impossible to lay the rod over for applying sidestrain if the butt is so long it cannot be moved easily arcoss your stomach. A good guide to the ideal distance is a lenght of a hand grip (at the bottom end) added to the lenght of your forearm and hand. The reel should then fit immediately below your hand. For the average adult this varies between 21 and 24 inches from butt cap to reel stem - no more

I have the Fox Warriors in 2.75lb TC, with which I'm reasonably happy - although the shrink rubber handle is a little too narrow for my liking.
I also have 3 Silstar Kevlar Des Taylor's, which belonged to a friend of mine who passed away last year. I love these, they're 13ft, 2.25lbs TC and a through action. The handles are abbreviated cork and fit my hands a treat. I actually improved my PB twice in 10 minutes during the summer, and was able to call Alan when he was in hospital to let him know that I had 2 takes each with a PB simultaneously. The first was 16lbs ozs, and the second was 19lbs 12ozs.
Still waiting to catch a '20' though!

There are so many good value rods available these days that we are spoilt for choice. The amount of these under £50 is amazing.Yes they may be made in China, yes they might not be at the cutting edge of rod technology but they are all better/as good as anything you would have paid £100 for 10 years ago!

Yeh thats the only problem with Ebay is you have to watch the postage and the feedback of the seller to make sure you don't get ripped off, I have paid over the odds myself to the postage because you just get carried away. I would recommend anyone who is new to Ebay who is looking to buy tackle to check out all the details of the item carefully. Don't get me wrong for certain items it is an excellent way of buying stuff especially if its second hand stuff from people who want rid or have bought 'the next best thing' and want rid of there 'old stuff'
