Tiger nuts are a good bait for carp. So i went out and got some. How the hell do you use them. i know you must boil them, because they are hard, but how and for what time. Would you fish them on the hook or on a hair rig.

Growlers are the greatest particle for big carp ever! (well probabley!) Lots of theories as to why but the fact is they do catch carp and just as importantly keep on catching them. They need to be soaked for 24 hours then boiled for 20-30minutes.They will still be very hard though but safe to use.Best way is to fish them on a hair rig.You can use a pointed boillie heedle but the best and above all safest way is to use a "nut drill".Simpley drill the hole then pass the hair through it.
Nuts are also good fished "popped up" This used to be done by making an "artificial" nut out of cork and fishing it on a hair above a natural. You can now buy ready made artificial nuts from the tackle shop.Another good way using only natural nuts is to drill a large hole halfway into two nuts and join them together with a cylinder of cork.
When preparing your nuts dont bother trying to flavour or colour them as they just dont take either (unlike peanuts etc). Also they dont need anything else! A great bait that nearly never "blows".

I agree with Budgie, Tiger nuts are tip top baits for carp and there are good reasons for using them. Apart from the irresistible taste the nuts hold, they also hold large amounts of protein too. (Hence the reason why they like to feed on them). In general carp are quite lazy, if they can eat small amounts of high protein foods without swimming round looking for other food sources they will, (Sometimes the bigger the better). Food is sucked from vegetation and strained in the carps mouth. Thus releasing inedible mouthfuls of sediment via the carps gill rakers and muscular soft palate (Hence the reason for fizzy bubbles when feeding). The carp then proceeds to crunch the goodness out of the bait via the very strong crunchers which the carp have located at the back of the throat. (A bit like us ing a cold pint of lager on a very hot day) There are many ways carp like to take Tiger nuts as bait, I say this with experience. I have caught many carp with tiger nuts, be them presented as single bait, stock or kill and or even multiple fashion, either method has contributed to my catch rate. You can fish Tiger nuts popped up as well, it’s simple to do. Just get your partners eyebrow tweezers and pierce the nut whilst gently turning the tweezers boring a hole through the middle. Once the bait has had the middle bored out, stick a fishing cork in the middle of the nut. Simple as that! You can carry this procedure out on 4/5 nuts which you would then attach to a hair rig. Just because you decide to fish Tiger nuts as bait it doesn’t mean you should start to pile loads of other particle baits in to your swim. Many people would think using such small baits would never catch a fish. This would be wrong thinking, as well as ignorant. In the UK alone we lose lots of quality carp due to anglers not preparing their particle baits properly. Please, please and please again soak your particles to the manufacturer’s instructions. Its very important you preparer your particle baits as suggested, otherwise we will all be fishing, the other side of the fence! Thanks for reading.
