Hi lads.Do you think we are generally being ripped off when it comes to the asking prices of these essential pieces of kit? Think about it,the lighter they are the more they cost therefore less carbon equals less material cost and I don't buy the argument about various grades costing much more than cheaper grades as we used to use carbon fibre at my place of employ and granted there was a price difference between various types but not amounting to a couple of thousand quids worth. Also the lighter they are the weaker they are and I have yet to be proven otherwise.I have two lercs,an 8001 and a 5001.Both get the same amount of usage and have never trashed a section through normal fishing with the much cheaper 5001.Can't say the same for the 8 though. I also think that alot of last years top of the range surplus models have the graphics resprayed and are knocked out as a much cheaper this years model. I also think that the tackle manufacturers have in stock the top spec poles for the next two or three years. What do you think, are we being shafted?

I totally agree with you..
The spares for poles are a total rip off, but like everything else in life, We need them.
I bought a new pole in the summer and it took me ages to pick one as there is so many out there.
The pole i bought came with the usual tops but i wanted extra tops with it, my local tackle shop told me that one of the other poles in their range used the same tops.
Low and behold my tops were over £50, but exactly the same tops for the other pole were £30. No Difference.

I think poles spares are a total rip off. I snapped a section on a maver pole they wanted £55.00 to replace it. i got it repaired locally for £25.00 and its better than before. People must be paying £1500.00 for poles. i buy the older model. great deals avaliable.

If we are getting ripped off, it's not the tackle shops that are getting rich off it. The mark up on most poles is minimal. The cost is mostly incurred in the design and the making of the mandrel. There are only a few pole manufacturers in operation. With most poles being made in the same factory.

Sorry Dace I have to disagree ;D on that because in my local tackle the owner buy fishing tackle elsewhere and charge a little bit more for the mark up price to cover for the traveling expense and try to make a small profit if he/she can. I know a certainly number of tackle are charging over the recomended retail price that you do see from the fishing catalogue.

You say you disagree with Dace, But Andrew thats what he is saying, the mark up one poles is minimal and the dealer only make a small profit.

"Minimal mark up" on poles? Who have you guys been talking to? Ah your local hard done by tackle dealer I suppose! Sorry to burst the bubble guys but here is just the first example I could lay my hands on.Taken from the 2000 LEEDA Trade catalogue- Trade price=£1030.96 + VAT@17.5% Retail price=£1500 Not a bad wage for one phone call eh? I have no problem with some one making a living but what really grips me is making this sort of profit and still whinning about how hard you have it and what a favour you are doing for the customer! Anglers are to blame though for being such "mug punters" and believing the dealers.
