Just found out Ivan Marks my hero. The cheeky grin is no more, cigarette sales tumbled long ago and gone are days when producing his landing net meant untangling half a dozen reels from it.
Untidy, but undeniably brilliant, Ivan Marks succumbed to cancer on Sunday, December 5 aged 68. He represented England on a number of occasions in the seventies and early eighties, the highlight being in 1976 in Bulgaria when he won the individual silver medal. Top Man, and a brilliant angler will be missed.
As a member of the crack Leicester Likely Lads match team, he could take large fields apart using float or swing-tip tactics and his rich array of hauls included winning the Great Ouse Championships three times in four years when fields were over 1,000 strong.
For many years he had a weekly column in Angling Times when his rival was the late dick Walker. He attracted a crowd of spectators wherever he travelled and certainly played to the gallery but in a nice way and the audience just loved it.
“Ivan Marks was without doubt one of the top match anglers of all time and in his heyday was a household name at a time when carbon rods and 16 metre poles were non existent,” said NFA president Terry Fell.

Yes a great loss, I also followed Ivan's column in the AT as a youngster, he certainly inspired me to get out on that river bank, even if all the best pegs for miles were taken! Yes I remember when rivers contained fish and anglers fished rivers in there hundreds!
Yes he was a quality angler and a master of the waggler.
In his fishing career he won Over 10 England Caps, Won 3 out of 4 Great Ouse Championships, 3 Times C.I.U. Champion, Welland Championship, Sunday Championship, Embassy Individual Champion.
I did once sat behind Ivan a couple of time on the Avon at the John Smiths and though I tried not to disturb him, others weren't quite so considerate but never once did he ignore them and a bit of banter usually followed and always with that great smile and easy laugh that he had. He took life as it came and even after his heart transplant he just got on with it, with that devil may care attitude that he had.
Rest in Peace Ivan, A true legend

Ivan Marks will be missed. He did so much to promote the angling world. And i too sat behind him a few times at the John Smiths at Evesham. He will be missed,
