I fish on some waters with very silty bottoms. and the best method is the feeder, but with a Maggot they will bury under the silt. what is the best way of killing them without ruining them? i use hot water.

Freezing is good too. Some good speciemen hunters also rate dead mags higher than live ones for baiting up.

I use dead maggots on the lodge pool because of the silt. freezing works well as budgie said. i sometimes use one live maggot and one dead one, seems to work well.

Answered a question for me too. Thanks BUDGIE. Also how long do you need to freeze the maggots.

I just stick them in the freezer over night mate but I suppose it doesnt take that long to kill them.

I am learning all the time. i all went to the tackle store with the best quality maggots.   And i have fished in the summer when i have left the lid off them and they kick it very quickly. Now we want dead maggots. Dont let the tackle shops cashin on this live maggots £2.00 pint DEAD MAGGOTS £2.00 pint plus casters no waste. Well i will have to try this out.

Ive always thought one of the major reasons casters can have an advantage over maggots is the fact that they cant crawl away or burrow out of sight.A lot of the big carp from Conningbrook (home of the present British record) came out to anglers fishing big beds of casters. Its a nice easy and efective method but with the price of casters, well!
Even though you can turn your own can you imagine the time and effort to turn half a dozen gallons! Dead maggots is a far cheaper alternative!
Ive only used dead maggots for big carp so I would be most interested in how people use them for other species ie can you use them in a normal block end still or do you have to use an open end and some groundbait?
