Fished the river Avon today at Bidford, 6 hours and nothing but frostbite!
A lot of people I repsect in angling will talk at length about the quality of river fishing, particulalry in winter, but in general the talk is of how much better and how much more skilled is river fishing...
Difficult banks, overgrown pegs, even long walks I can handle but as far as I can tell my watercraft must be rubbish...
This swim was at the end of a wier, lovely oxygenated water combined with some depth, Casters, Maggots, sweetcorn and luncheon meat - nothing not even the obligatory bleak!
I enjoyed trotting the float and its better than watching telly but I could really do with some help, hints and tips... I'm not after monsters, just a few fish!
Thanks in advance!

Like all fishing one of the most important things in river fishing is being able to "feed" the swim properly.Learning how to present the bait is relatively easy in comparison.Im not going to even attempt to describe how to feed a swim correctly. What I would sugest though is to go to a big match and sit behind some of the top anglers and watch how they go about getting the fish into their swim, getting them to feed and also holding them there.
Rivers are normaly a good bet for some sport in cold conditions, especially if there are chub present.Having to constantly expend energy swimming against the current river fish need to keep feeding no matter what the conditions. Chub are big eaters and do so in the coldest of weather.

Mr M, Was that the Redditch Town AS stretch you were fishing at Bidford? If so, which peg did you fish.

Mr M, All rivers can be hit and miss this time of year, unless of course you know an out and out flyer! It certainly doesn't sound like you did much wrong. Perhaps we (Andrew!) could arrange a get-together/fish-in on a river before the end of the season and talk things through. Maybe on one of the BAA waters - being a southerner I could do with a little local knowledge of all these waters that are new to me! Incidentally, I had a short session (4 to 6:30) yesterday afternoon on the RTAS stretch of the Avon. The river was carrying some colour and a little extra pace but nothing too bad. It looked good for an end of season barbel as the light fell. So I fished specifically for the barbel in a noted peg using maggot feeder over a bed of hemp and 4mm pellett, 6lb line and 6 mags on a size 8. Had one bite...... .....a skimmer about a pound and a half! Not what I was after but a welcome fish all the same, just a shame you can't get a run of them going on the pole when you try and catch them from the river. Anyway, enjoy your weekends! I'm heading east now to meet up with the missus and kids over at some friends in Ipswich. At least the sun has come out for a blast on the bike! Stu

Hi In my experience on that stretch I use lobb worms with a size ten hook fished with an arsley bomb ledger or a coffin if its fast flowing and it always does the business for me with the chub and the occasional barbel.
To get my lobbs I use washing up liquid (fairy lipsquid does it for me)about 6 to one with water spread it around on some damp grass and they come up(you have to grab em quick) and you must wash them quickly or they die. Hope this helps

I would be up for that to. I love fishing the Avon. fishing much better the last few years. When i was a kid the Avon was the place to fish, and over the years many clubs, match organizers have battered the Avon. But things are looking better on the river, the last 12 months. I still fish mostly on the Teme for big barbel, had a few but still waiting for that big one.

I am up for this too. I will see what i can sort out. Would be a great day out. And yes the Budgie the Avon at Harvington and the day ticket stretch of the Severn above Bewdley, would be the ideal venue. Will get to work and keep you posted.
