A couple of years ago I wanted to get into river fishing and someone kindly sent me an old plastic centrepin.. I really couldn't get on with it.. after a reading around I now realise that is because it doesn't relly rotate freely.
Like a muppet I went out and bought an abu 704 closed faced reel new instead. When it works it does a fine job for river trotting but it's a piece of (expensive) crap. I didn't use it that much, on the third trip the handle stopped engaging with the winding mechanism, you had to apply pressure at a funny angle just to wind in... I took it back the shop in question, they fixed it but accused me of taking it apart and putting something back in the wrong way round (which I did not do) I have used it a couple more times and it feels like it will starts doing the same again. It's nearly 2 years since I bought it, so I guess that's a dead one now.
I plan to get a better centrepin and try again....
Any advice?

Hi Mr M I not sure what the current availability of some of the better models I know until a couple of years ago there was a bloke making and selling Centrepins. If my memory serves me right he was the manager or owner of one of the old reel companies in Redditch that bite the dust.
I will do so research and get back to you.

On the subject of pins it really depends on how much you want to spend.Anything from a tenner to £450+!
You cant go wrong with a Leeds or even better one of the newer Okuma Avensis Pro reels. The Okuma costs around the £75 mark with the Leeds being closer to £50.Andrew has both get him to give you a go with them.Be carefull if you buy a pin of Ebay though as there is some right rubbish on it!

I think Andy will sort me out with his Leeds, so I don't want to try anything else out lest I fall in love with it... I will see if I can hook up with Andy before his mega carping trip...
