Hello Everyone! Just signed up! I'm pretty new to all this having just re-discovered my passion for angling after some 26 years away! I have been dusting off my Shakespeare Match International rod, (which is still pretty new, as I bought it soon before I packed in) and my 10' 6" split cane, and have been heading to the rivers around our area. When I was a kid I fished the Avon at Fladbury and Charlton as we lived in Charlton but when we moved back to Solihull I was restricted to the 'cut' and a lovely pool in Knowle that the school angling club had access too. Now I'm trying to remember what to do and where to do it. I have been fishing the Blythe at Hampton and Coleshill and also the Alne at Alcester courtesy of the very helpful Dave Stain of Riverside Angling Club. (Many thanks Dave, my son is really enjoying our outings). I am always interested in hearing of other local rivers and how to access them, particularly the smaller ones, Arrow, Alne etc. All hints and tips gratefully received. Looking forward to broadening my knowledge and horizons in conjunction with LPAA. JP

Hi Carpy,
Glad you are still harking back to your roots with you old Shakespeare rod. I have had to succumb to the modern age and have just shelled out for a new carbon fibre Shakespeare which has yet to see water. Looking forward to that though! My, how’s things change!!
I used to think that my Match International was the height of technology and fashion and was amazed at the lightness and strength of the new rods! (Sound like my old Dad now!) Haven’t given my split cane rod a go yet but this will be purely for bottom fishing. It’s a dead weight and just cannot be held for any length of time. Great rod though!
Have also recently joined a club to enable me to fish more of the Alne and am looking forward to exploring that. Hope to get out over Christmas a few times. Do you have much experience of the Alne? I am always open to suggestions regarding tactics and what I should expect. I am going to be fishing around Aston Cantlow, have you ever tried it, if so, have you any suggestions?
All the best John
