Ive fly fished for most things from Marlin to Perch! Fly fishing is a lot more than just catching browns or rainbows!Take a look in the predator section about the Rio Ebro and you can see a picture of a Catfish I caught on fly. You say that fly fishing is expensive? I would have to disagree there. These days fly fishing is probabley the cheapest!Think about it you could be kitted up to cover most situstions with just one rod,one reel with a spare spool, two lines (in fact even one at a push) and a few flies and oddments of tackle.Compare that to an equivellant quality coarse (especialy carp) outfit. The price of a days fishing varies enourmously normally the bigger water being the cheapest. Many small still waters now do "sporting" or "catch and release" tickets that due to the fact you are not taking any fish away are quite cheap.Admitedly an average day ticket will be double a normal coarse fishing day ticket but take into account the cost of your bait for a days coarse fishing. Also these days there are several small game fishery "syndicates" that are often considerably cheaper than many carp ones! If you want to let me know the waters you intend to fish I can gladly make a few recomendations to tackle required. Carpy your going to have to change the "smilies" for this section as you cant write t.r.o.u.t with out that dam tench popping up!!

Sorry Budgie will sort it. i havent added the smilies to the new boards yet. That was a concern with me the cost of day tickets to Trout fisheries.

I've been fly fishing for over 40 years. Let me make one point perfectly clear, I'm not one of those so called 'purest'.
I fish with wet flies, dry, streamers and even 'poppers'. I own numerous rods and reels. Some expensive and some are just run of the mill. I even have a bamboo rod I use once in a blue moon that belonged to my late father.
I never go after one particular species of fish time after time. I have fished salmon, striped-bass, rainbows, largemouth bass, bluegills, crappie (sac-a-lait), bone fish and tarpon. It really never matters.
I wade streams, fish from boats and I even use a 'belly boat' (float tube).
To me there is nothing more relaxing than fly fishing and the best part of that is when I am using a dry fly or 'popper' and watch the water explode when a fish comes to surface and devours the fly.
It makes no difference what type of fisherman you are or what type of fish you prefer. Everyone should experience the thrill and excitement of fly fishing at least once in their lifetime.

Hi Drivet great post! I love my fly fishing and its great to read stuff by some one else who does. Not been able to afford to get out as much as usual this year but its just made those trips even more special!
Over your side of the pond it is quite accepted that fly fishing is a method for all species but here in the UK fishing for anything much other than Trout and Salmon with the fly is still quite new!

Thanks, Budgie. Mighty kind of you. I see you have an 'eye for the fly' yourself. There is a lot of excitement when you hook on to a 20 or 30 pound salmon on the fly. Makes it a little tough on old toads such as myself but some how you seem to find the strength from deep within to land them.
I have even caught quite a few German carp in my time on the fly. Heck of a fight I may add.
