PHEASANT TAIL NYMPH
This is one fly that I would have in my fly box no matter what type of water I was fishing anywhere! There are many variations of the PTN but here are a couple of must haves-
Sawyers Pheasant Tail Nymph
Named after its creator a famous trout angler of yesteryear .It is a very simple fly to tie and is traditionally tied from just Pheasant Tail fibres and copper wire. Best to have both leaded (an underbody of lead wire is included in the dressing to make it sink faster) and unleaded versions. Hook sizes 12 and 10 will suffice. The PTN doesn’t represent any one specific food item but is merely a general suggestion of a nymph or small pin fry. Best fished on a floating line and long leader and retrieved slowly.
An excellent variation of the standard PTN is one tied with a fluorescent lime green thorax. As you will find out this is a very attractive colour to trout. Well worth having. Once again in sizes 12 and 10.
Coves Pheasant Tail.
Another very useful variation. Once again named after its creator Arthur Cove one of the pioneers of modern day still water trout fishing. Another very simply tied fly using only PT fibres, tying thread, copper wire and rabbit under fur. This fly like the Sawyers doesn’t represent a specific species but is a general imitation of an aquatic fly in its “buzzer” stage. Normally tied unleaded and fished on a floating line. Not retrieved as such but allowed to drift round on the breeze. Often fished in teams of three. When fished as a team the bottom or “point” fly is some times leaded. Best to carry sizes 14 to 10.
