Well its that time of year again! with only a couple of months of piking left my thoughts are turning to trout or more acurately fly fishing. I normally start in March on some waters with others not opening till April.
Allready ive been looking on Ebay for a new floating line.I want a new Cortland 444 but dont want to pay the shop prices! last new ones I brought were nearly 10 years ago and despite regular cleaning and dressing the floating AFTM7 really needs replacing,no matter how much I stretch it it still doesnt lay as straight as it should! Cant complain though its done a lot of work!
These days my eye sight is that poor that i tend to buy most of my flies. However some patterns that I really rate cant be brought so the fly tying vice and spectacles will have to come out!
Other than that though there isnt much preparation to do,one of the great beauties of fly fishing!
Anyone else getting ready or considering having a go this year?

I might give it ago once the weather warm up a bit and try my luck at the Forest of Arden Golf Course, quite a few trout lakes round there and some nice trout as well.
I did find another one over towards Evesham and that look quite nice the last time I saw it, plenty of big rainbow trout.
But there is two in Redditch now, 1 not far from Hewell Grange! which the farmer said that there are couple of pools stocked with rainbows and tiger trout? and the other one is at the back of webheath stocked with rainbows but it is based as an syndicate members only

We will have to have a trip out one week end bruv. How much are the local day ticket waters? If not you will have to come down here. we could have either a day/half day on a small still water or a day out in the boat at Bewl. We havnt been trout fishing together since Loch Awe in (I think) 1989! Still got some pictures will post them once I get the main PC and scanner back on line.
If I remember right a couple of you said you would like to have a go at trout fishing a while back.Andy might be worth you asking for a price at the local waters. If enough people on here are up for it we could have a day showing casting and fly tying(?) in the morning with a chance to fish and catch some trout in the afternoon/evening?

Yes it is really low at the moment but it wont affect the fishing! Ive seen it like this before in 1987.Before the pipe line (which pumps water in from the River Medway) was built it was relatively common for the levels to drop low,but admitedly not this time of year.
Bewl works on a strange water policy as it is now privately owned (Scottish Power) and answerable to its share holders. The res is never pumped full as it obviously costs money to run the pumps to bring the water all the way. They only fill it up so much then rely on the winters rain fall to fill up the rest.Cant justify running off water that they have had to pay to pump in you see! Occaisionally they are let down and the winter is not wet enough.Suppose they are now limited to how much water they can extract from the river as all of the South Easts rivers are also very low too.

For me too If so count me in for definite. Got a few trout fishing on the Little Alne down by Wootton Wawen near Henley. It's only upto 10ft to 25ft wide until it gets to Alcester and then t becomes the Great Alne, but the private water i fish on the Little Alne holds a good head of fish, big big barbel, loads of chub to 2lb and loads of silver fish. I have caught many good trout thier fishing on a pole, fishing on wider stretch's for a good days sport. And they sure give you a good fight and some fun on a pole. The big barbel i have not got one out yet. They get hooked and head for fast water and into snag's. But i will try again this year.
