I am having problems trying to get my desktop and laptop to share the adsl internet connection. The 2 computers are connected with a crossover cable. The laptop cannot access the internet. I get the message "The dependency service or group failed to start". Even tho I am logged on as ADMIN, I am totally unable to initiate the firewall or allow sharing of the internet connection!! Anyone that can help i would be greatful

Hi Paul What operating systems are you using and how does the adsl modem plug in,usb or network connection ?
I would probably recommend a router from say ebuyer.com for 20 quid ish for better security.
But I have done it without one before on a few peoples machines so let me know.
I must add in my experience that if it is a network connection you will need to add another network card and then you are able to share.

Right i have Windows XP on both machines, and they are connect by a crossover cable to network cards in the computer. I looked on ebuyer for a router, but so many, can you recommend one. Thanks for your help.

Hi Again If you have 2 network cards in the main machine one connected to the adsl and one to the laptop you can just put the ip address of the main machine in the dns and gateway settings on the laptop.
Go in to the network connections rigt click into properties click tcp/ip click properties and put in the ip address of the main machine in the dns and gateway settings and hopefully that should do it.
I'll have a look at the routers tommorrow but you may want to consider spending about 70 quid on a wireless one so you can have the laptop anywhere in the house. Anyway hope you get on ok. Let me know
