Nice one Carpy.Having used to live right on the coast I used to do a lot of sea fishing, both beach and boat.Still got my own 30' trawler(not that its sea worthy now sadly) Dont fish as regular now (during the winter used to be out on the beach at least three nights a week) in fact not since the cod fishing went down hill in the late 80,s.Only go about a dozen times a year now at most.
In the 80's I was also into Tournement Casting and was a Sea Angler magazine casting instructor. Not been to a tournement in years though.
Most regular salt water fishing I do these days is for Mullet in the tidal reachs of the Rivers Rother and Medway.

Thanks Budgie i hope this section takes off. Have done a bit of sea fishing, mainly on holiday. Best sea fishing i had was when i went to Anglesey. Fishing off the rocks in a small village of Molfra. I would go down in the day and watch the seals if they come in to the rocks it was a indication the mackeral had come to. So i could cast out my feathers and sometimes catch 4 or 5 in one go, great fun. At night i would fish with lugworm, or sand eel. for bass. But all i caught was Dogfish loads of them. great fun

If I remember right Andrew you did come out on the beach one night with me and Bob? The salt air made you feel sick though.Didnt you catch a bass that night on my rod or was it me,I cant remember?

God I have forgotten all about that one. In fact Budgie it was a Pouting that we all caught on that night and it wasn't the salt air that made me feel bad,it was the deadly fumes of the parafin we used while trying to fix the light in the daytime!!

Mmmm Last Year on Holiday I did my first beach casting off the rocks nr St Ives, Cornwall, because of the tides I was fishing about 9pm - midnight, 4 nights on the trot, to catch one Bass. But it was a good one, being long enough to keep - it tasted ing! Would love to try again this year - I did try similar methods in Tenerife but didn't see any evidence of aquatic life!

Its a great time of year for freshwater anglers to try a bit of sea fishing.A lot of very sporting fish are close in to our shores at the moment and your normal gear can be used.
Most harbours, creeks and estuaries will have a good head of Grey Mullet in them. These are extremely hard fighting but shy fish.Your normal waggler outfit and 4lb line is perfect.Baits like bread, ragworm and even your familiar maggot works for these.
Bass can also be targeted with standard carp gear.Float fishing live baits will be home from home for pike anglers whilst a ledgered peeler crab will also work.
The humble mackeral isnt really treated as the true sporting fish that it is by most sea anglers.A beach rod and string of feathers although being effective for gathering them for bait doesnt really give them much chance to show their mettle.Try your float gear and you will be amazed at the fight one can give you! Easily reached with a long distance waggler from piers, walls and jettys.Just got to make sure you can get down to the water to net them! When they are really chasing food hard in to the shoreline great fun can be had with fly gear! Cant afford to go big game fishing then give the mackeral a go on light gear and I assure you you wont be missing out!
Pollack are another species that can be targeted with you coarse gear. These to come close in in the summer.Along with the Bass a great species for the lure angler to target.Once again rocky headlands piers, harbour walls etc are as better bet than the open beach.
One thing to remember though if you use your fresh water gear in the sea is to give it a thorough washing off in freshwater after each trip.Salt water can make short work of rod rings and reels if not cleaned off.
